Pelicans passing in biblical proportions

Category: Birds | Date: Jul 02 2007 | By: tumaren

Great White Pelicans over Tumaren today estimated at over 1000 flying due north through extensive thunder storms. I suppose they are on their way to Turkana?. I have never seen so many Pelicans flying together.

Red-Billed Oxpeckers Nesting in Fence Post

Category: Birds | Date: Jun 21 2007 | By: tumaren

I found Oxpeckers nesting in one of our Fence Posts the other day. Oxpeckers are not as common here as they are in other parts of Kenya. People speculate that their scarcity is due to Dip Medicine and the control of ticks.

Eurasian Cuckoos and Eurasian Hobbys in Droves

Category: Birds | Date: Apr 21 2007 | By: tumaren

Lots of Eurasian Cuckoos and Hobbys have been passing Tumaren in the past few days. We also had a flock 30 Wood Sandpipers on one of our dams as well as a Red-backed Shrike and a handful of Lesser Grey Shrikes. All are on the way back to Europe and Asia. Interesting how the migrants that pass us north are usually a different assortment than those that pass us going south.

Rain and Migrant Birds

Category: Birds | Date: Mar 12 2007 | By: tumaren

Irania.jpg

We had our first rain last night. It has been two months since the heavy rains we received in January. Many Migrant birds have been around recently. On a recent birding safari we got a Booted Eagle, and hundreds of Whittethroats and Willow Warblers. In the past few weeks we have also had an Irania hanging around our security boma and 10 days ago about 60 European White Storks stopped in to spend the night with us on their way northward.
