There is no conservation issue more pressing than population.

Category: Issues | Date: Aug 30 2009 | By: tumaren

Here is a good article that outlines the effectiveness of Family Planning and, sadly, the consequences of cutting its funding.  Population is the issue that international and domestic environmentalists are forced to ignore for political reasons but it is absolutely the most pressing issue (environmentally as well as politically) facing Kenya.

human over population is the cause and the solution to most of the world’s ills. but how can one tell others to have fewer kids? one thing does help a lot and that is empower women and girls by educating them and help them to become independent. when women are educated and financially independent, they have fewer kids. unfortunately due to religious reasons or blind faith, too many choose to breed like animals because God has told them so.

sauwah,
you are absolutely right, you cant tell people what to do and really the most effective way anyway as you say, is to educate young girls and women. research has shown time and again that with a bit of education the birth rate comes down. I suppose this is not surprising as child birth is the leading cause of death among most African women. With the empowerment to safeguard their own bodies as well as the welfare of there other children (enough money for school and food) they more often than not choose fewer children. cheers, jc
