Vultures Galore

Category: Birds, camera-trap | Date: Oct 20 2008 | By: tumaren

Its always nice to see vultures coming into carcasses in our area.  Vultures, are taking such a terrible hit globally and even here in Kenya trends have shown that dramatic declines in particular areas, including Laikipia.  The following images of Ruppel’s Griffon Vultures were taken on a zebra carcass a few months back.

Is it a trick of perspective or are those Vultures actually as large as a hyaena?
You’d not sit under a tree with one of those in it. Too risky methinks.

Hi Tumaren. I realize you have more than just a Ruppel’s Griffon vultures. The giant vulture actually looks like a White-backed or is it an immature?Even the vulture immediately to the right of the carcass in the third photo seems a white-backed-there is some white showing on its lower back. And what of the two dark guys flanking the vultures and the Zebras are they Ravens? Fan-tailed?

Well the hefty ones in the second pic are formidable but it’s the one the size of a Land-Rover in the first I’d watch out for…
Nice to be back James. It’s all been going on here hasn’t it? A never ending cavalcade of the fanged, feathered and the fluffy, it’s the zoological equivalent of the Oscars’ red-carpet…
What season is it there? Is there a local Starbucks yet? What news?

Fantastic shots.
I love the way vultures always look slightly hung-over…

Martin, Thanks for pointing out the white-backs. I have a hard time with the juveniles when you cant clearly see the white backs. I suppose i just assumed that because there were some for sure adult griffons that the juveniles accompanying them were also griffon.
cheers, James
