New Large Mammal Recorded at Tumaren

Category: Mammals | Date: Mar 31 2008 | By: tumaren

Just when we thought there were likely no more large mammals to be discovered on tumaren, one shows up. Last night on a night game drive we had a very good look at a Striped Hyena. These guys are nocturnal hyenas like the aardwolf which we have recorded at tumaren on many occasions.

Wow, that’s great. Your photo is rather artistic … did you do that for slimming effect? I’m joking …we need to get it to correct the dimensions :)

If i could get a striped hyena pic i would be over the moon and broadcasting press releases left and right, but alas no pics..

Aardwolf????

Theresa Siskind St Petersburg FL, on 31 Mar 2008

So, there really was a hyena? Are striped the same as spotted?

James, on 01 Apr 2008

spotted hyena are the most common african hyena and the most likely to see on safari. The striped is a different species and is more strictly nocturnal. The aardwolf is a very small insectiverous hyena and also more nocturnal than spotted.

I sometimes think Hyaena are underrated.

Theresa Siskind St Petersburg FL, on 01 Apr 2008

Truly James, I only once before had heard someone refer to the striped hyena. This business about the aardwolf being in this classsification is news to me as well. So much to learn!

James, on 02 Apr 2008

Wim, I propose a Hyena Appreciation society. Despite his name, the aardwolf is a very cute and shy animal. Our dog found one in a hole not long ago. He ran off very spooked - Hound dog got reprimand.

I second that proposal James, the dewy-eyed and fluffy have had their day, it’s time slack-jawed slope-backed opportunists who reek of carrion got some recognition in this world. ‘Hug a Hyaena Day’, what think you?

Theresa Siskind St Petersburg FL, on 02 Apr 2008

Ok, I’ll go along with this proposal, but only if they agree to be nicer to my cheetahs…wishful thinking, I know.

Wim, on 03 Apr 2008

…you might be right there Theresa!
