Jackal and Friends at the salt

Category: Mammals, camera-trap | Date: Mar 13 2008 | By: tumaren

This Black-backed Jackal showed up at the salt last night. Still not an aardwolf but rather neat to see how inquisitive he was with the camera.

Then in the morning these Zebra as well as a male Impala were at the salt. Later after it rains it will be interesting to contrast how many species as well as the numbers will be coming to the salt. When everything is green there is far more salt consumption with buffalo, giraffe and elephants spending quite a bit of time at the lick. We heard today that the rains have begun at the coast.

Wonderful James about the rain, I truly pray it comes your way! Our jackal looks a little thin, I hope he fattens up a bit. The Zebra are lovely (as always); you can’t go wrong wearing black and white, perfect for any function! Now, why is it they prefer the salt lick when the grasses turn green?

Wim, on 13 Mar 2008

OK, I’m taking bets on how long before something finally eats the camera… Any takers?

Paula, on 13 Mar 2008

James, your pictures are too funny. Very entertaining. Thank you

Wim, betting, (particularly against my new toy from america) is stictly against the wildlifedirect directive.

Furthermore, It sort of sounds like your on the elephants/hyenas side thinking my surveilance is imposing on their civil rights?

Wim, on 14 Mar 2008

I can see the writing on the wall and as Tumaren’s resident eco-paparazzi you’re fair game James. Civil rights aside, one of the local beasties is going to get fed up with always having to fix their hair and make-up before popping out for a de-caff Latte at the local dik-dik midden and that camera will be toast.

James, on 14 Mar 2008

which midden?. I’d kill for a latte. these darn animals are playing with me and your giving them revolutionary ideas. next you’ll be suggesting they read animal farm.

Wim, on 14 Mar 2008

Would that literary ambition were part of the Tumaren book-club picture James, sadly they’re all over at Samburu Sushi comparing notes on Confessions of an Heiress by Paris Hilton while drawing straws on who’s going to “stumble accidentally” in front of your camera tonight… Expect pics of the alimentary canal of a Warthog iminently…

Christine C., on 14 Mar 2008

James and Win, you are both too funny! james, these pictures are terrific! “Confessions of an Heiress,” what a hoot…but I would hope the animals would have better sense than to read that trash…maybe you can suggest “The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe” instead!
