7 Elephants Poached on Koija Group Ranch
Category: Issues | Date: Jul 08 2007 | By: tumaren
Today it was reported that 7 elephants were poached on Koija Group Ranch not far north of us. This morning it was also reported that KWS officers were flying the area and were in pursuit of the poachers. This is very abnormal for this area and i imagine that KWS and the police will find the culprits quickly. More reports as we get them. Jamie

Seven elephants were killed? for what? If caught, how will the poachers be punished, because I can’t think of anything bad enough for killing endangered animals!

Jamie, So sorry to hear about this, especially this not being the norm. I certainly hope the culprits are found.

Jamie, Did they catch the poachers that killed those 7 elephants?

I apologize to everyone for not replying sooner to your comments here and to other notes on this blog. A setting with the blog was changed and i was not receiving any notification of comments. Christina, The poachers have not been captured and while it is impossible to say i suspect that culprits could have bribed their way out of the trouble. The elephants were killed for their ivory and if the poachers had been caught and had faced the justice system they would have faced a stiff sentence of many years behind bars. Cheers, James

Jamie: It must be difficult to poach seven elephants and make off with the ivory (?) without inside collusion (local community). Is this a sign of locals not seeing sufficient reward from sustainable use of wildlife - ie, tourism?

Michael,
I do think there was likely inside collusion of some kind and there certainly are some in the community that feel they are not getting enough back out of the local tourism. We employ several people in our safari business from this group ranch as do a number of the safari lodges in the area. We also camp on this land paying a nightly fee to the community treasury when we do. Still though, all this is never enough for everyone and more community development is alway needed. jc
