Rhino Beetle with Whip Scorpion Parasites

Category: Insects | Date: Apr 23 2007 | By: tumaren

We found this Rhino Beetle the other day and as we were examining him we noticed several Whip Scorpions attached to the back of his abdomen. I remember in EO Wilsons book “The Diversity of Life” a description of another Whip Scorpion parasite on another beetle. Interesting, I wonder if this species is described.

- Also see other smaller egg type things near the Whip Scorpion. I don’t know if these are eggs or another parasite.

i just found a large beetle on my back porch with those things on it too. i live in philomath, oregon but i didnt think scorpions were native to the willamette valley. what exactly are they doing on the beetle and how big do they get? im unsure of what kind of beetle it is but its big!

These arthropods are actually Pseudoscorpions. They are commensals actually just taking a ride on the beetle - using it as a taxi so to speak. They are mini-predators and will prey on the many small insects etc. associated with dung or rotting vegetation. Pseudoscorpions are found world-wide including temperate areas.

How interesting Mike, Thanks for that correction. I used to have that sun guide to spiders and their kin but i lost it. I had a quick look at your website, very cool stuff. I miss arizona, i worked on the first release of california condors up on the vermillion cliffs. best to the desert,
james
