Unidentified Young Snake
Category: Reptiles | Date: Oct 24 2006 | By: admin
Found this young snake under one of our flys the other day as we were taking down camp. Not such a great picture but if anyone has any ideas they would be greatly appreciated.
I suppose this image may appear too small on the blog for IDing. Please write should a snake person out there want a larger image.

Looks like it could be an egg eater of sorts by the shape of the head but image is indeed too small to be sure…also what sort of size was it? Would be curious to find out myself. Just picked up a long tailed worm snake here Ngong Hills but it was 20 odd cm long and they are only supposed to get to 12.5 or so in East Africa. More on the snake soon.

Suddenly, i’m thinking that it is just a white lip (Crotaphopeltis hotamboela). I was using my Snakes of South Africa and the picture for the species which they call a Herald Snake is totally different than The East African Book. I have another photo of this snake as well as one of a big eyed snake that i recorded several months ago. I will have to post them in a new thread though as i don’t think i can insert a picture in this reply.

zap me a larger image of the thing.. I am interested.
rdrewes@calacademy.org… Yeah, you will find major differences between our books and the South African book (and also the one written by Bill Branch- a lot of his images are SAF snakes, not ours.
